Have a tohatsu m50d 1996 and live in souther colorado far from the few qualified mechanics in Denver. The engine started reving up over 2000 rpm but barely moving the boat. Putt putt home. had a mechanic tell me I needed a new prop. got a prop. putt putt home. Is it a lower unit gear issue? new to boat engines. Engine runs well. Found a lower unit on EBAY for 600 bucks seller says is a late 90s. What should I do? Please. little kids need to boat safely.

Welcome to the forums,

If it's not a shift lever issue that needs sync and lower leg being offered is in good working shape, is 100% compatible and a fast swap to do, go for it, maybe could lower a bit asking price ?

Happy Boating

Diagnose the LU to make sure your gears are OK, and shifter linkage is not bent or out of sync on a Remote unit. You may have gotten a bad prop. You can check for a spun prop, which would allow normal slow-speed operation, but not allow running at speed.
