I have a 9.9 honda , probably about a 1995 or so which is leaking oil when it is running. A very visible film can be seen on the water when it is running at the dock, and I can't tell where it is coming from. I originally bought this as a parts engine and after taking the parts I wanted off of it (electric start components) the rest of it didn't look too bad so I put it back together and sure enough it ran. Because it is a parts engine, the history on it is unknown, but I did get it running and it ran fairly well. I do know that it was a salt water engine, but that's about all.
It does not burn excessive amounts of oil, and no oil can be seen on the exterior, or around the base of the engine itself. I have ruled out a gas leak, and my guess is that there is perhaps a bad lower main seal, but before I tear it apart, I thought I might ask if someone has some insight as to where this oil is coming from. Anyone have any ideas?
