We have a Honda 2001 130hp in alaska

It has run fine until now. At idle it only runs on three cylinders.

When we speed it up it runs on all four cylinders,

we changed spark plugs and coil but same problem.

Can you help?

IMHO you have not provided sufficient info upon which anyone can base an educated attempt to help you.

* HOW did you determine that your BF130 only runs on three cylinders at idle? Did you pull spark plug wires to see if doing so made any difference, or what?

* Is it always the same cylinder that is not working?

* Is there spark at the plug for that cylinder?

* What does the plug indicate: rusty? running too lean? running too rich? what?

* What is the cylinder's compression?

* Is that cylinder's injector working normally; not clogged, good fuel pressure?

The more info you provide, the better the likelihood someone can help you with an accurate possibility for the cause of the issue you report.

Re: Honda 130 hp rough idle

We removed the spark plugs after the engine was idling and the # 3 plug is wet - apparently not firing. when we run the motor at top speed and then remove the spark plugs they look normal.

We changed the coil and wire because we had a spare coil.

We do not have any way to check the injector at this location in alaska.

We are not sure if this is a serious problem that might cause further damage by continued operation.

Re: Honda 130 hp rough idle

It may be that the idle jet for that carb is plugged. The high speed jet may be fine and is providing fuel but when you let off it isn't. I had a similar issue but mine was the other way around. It would run at low speeds but the high speed jets were clogged and it would cut out. If the jets are too clogged it will be nearly impossible to clean so you would have to replace. If you are unable to take carb apart you may try running some seafoam, although if it is clogged bad no amount of seafoam will help.

Re: Honda 130 hp rough idle

The Honda 130hp motor is an injected motor, hence no carburetors, so no worries about idle speed jets.

Is there spark at the connector for the #3 plug at idle? Make a good connection with a wire to the terminal in the connector, then hold the other end of the wire 1/16" from the block while the engine is running at idle (be careful not to get any spark near gas fumes!). If you see a hot white spark then perhaps your #3 cylinder is getting flooded such that the spark cannot ignite the mixture in the cylinder. If you get no spark, or a weak yellow spark, then perhaps your coil or sparkplug wire is bad.

Try swapping parts with other cylinders to see if the problem follows the part from the #3. If it does, then the part from #3 is likely bad. For example, swap the injector from #3 with one from another cylinder. If the #3 then fires properly but the other is then wet, then it's likely the #3 injector is bad. Or, if swapping the sparkplug wire and coil with another results in no spark/weak spark on the other, but strong spark on #3, then the original #3 wire/coil may be bad. If #3 remains the bad one no matter the foregoing swaps then perhaps the issue lies further upstream in the ECM or the magneto.

Good luck.
