1999 Honda 130 shifting problem

I just bought a new to me boat with Honda 130 on the back it has quicksilver controls on it and the thing wants to kinda hang up and grind more than normal ,I really notice it around the dock when trying to load and unload when shifting forward to reverse doesnt do it everytime if you if you kinda fool with the controls it will shift with no grinding I have a online manual but its not clear enough to trouble shoot this any help would be great ..

Download the owners manual. Run through the maintenance including gear oil and lubrication points.

My engine makes a very quiet clunk when it goes into gear but no grinding unless i an moving across the shift point too slowly. If maintenance doesn't work, check the cable adjustment.
