honda Exhaust

I have a 2001 Honda 9.9 and it has been a terrific engine, but recently it has a problem with low idle trolling,it will not hold a consistent speed,I am told that the exhaust has corroded through from the inside, but the engine needs this back pressure to operate properly??Can this system be removed with taking the cylinder head off or is it time to renew motor??I know the part is quite pricey,but I have seen Hondas much,much older and still running well??
