35hp honda reverse and nuetral only after impeller change

I changed impeller today, counted threads for shift linkage, but now only have reverse and neutral. I counted threads, then put the shifter in reverse to better access bOTH nuts. disconnected the nuts. did my work. hooked back up. cant remember honestly if i left it there throughout the whole procedure. (dumb if i did not, i know)

What is a way, if I drop that lower unit again to "start from scratch"?

I have a 6 thread count on the front of the shift linkage when in neutral....can i go from there? Without taking the lower unit off? (hopefully)
