Okay I posted earlyer that I had found water in the lower unit of the motor I had traded.

well I drained the water/oil out an flushed with oil then refilled unit.
well I ran the motor at the lake a few days ago to test the lower unit. It worked but now checking the oil there was water in it agin.

soooooooo I guess eather the prop seal is bad or the prop shaft is bent.

If the shaft is bent does the lower unit have to be replaced?

can the prop shaft seal be relaced at home?

any help would be great.

There are shift shaft o-rings, driveshaft seal, propshaft seal and water pump seal to be replaced. Any one or several could be leaking. Yes, the seals can be done at home. Yes, the propshaft can be replaced at home.

If doing all the labor to tear it apart, I'd change all o-rings and seals, and throw a WP kit in at the same time. Same labor, and only a few extra dollars for parts -- and peace of mind.

I ran my 1980 Johnson 25 for years with a leaky lower unit. I just changed the fluid several times a year.
I think running it with a banged up prop was the culprit.
When I replaced the seals all the gears still looked brand new.
You should go ahead and order the seal kit since the job really isn't that hard.
