I recently purchased a 2001 40 HP Tohatsu. The previous owner passed away and his wife sold it to me. Anyway, I put the motor on my boat and have run with 0 problems. The other night I put it up on a plane in about 15 feet of water and after about 1 minute I heard a grinding noise, motor still running but not moving. I immediately shut it down, trolled home, and pulled the foot to find my bevel gear in place, but in 3 pieces. I ordered a new gear from my local Tohatsu dealer (pn # 345-64020-1). Everything else in the case looked to be in great shape. I went to put the new gear on but it looks as though the new gear needs to be pressed on or something because it won't slide on the driveshaft enough to get the retaining nut back on. Any help guys?
