What kind of oil would I need to get for my new 2009 50 hp tldi? Walmart has in tcw3 penzoil full syntheic or a penzoil xlf syntheic blend and the quicksilver products. I am confused about all the different kinds.

Re: What kind of oil for nissan 50hp tldi?

The Tohatsu website lists a bunch of different oils in their TLDI Frequently Asked Questions page that they have tested and approved for use in their TLDI models. You can find the list here (it's under their "tech info" section of their website: http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/tldi_faqs.html

Basically all 2-strokes need a rating of TCW3. The problem though is that rating is a "minimum" standard set by the National Marine Mfg. Assoc. (NMMA) and was created back in the good old carbureted 2-stroke days. But with the new direct injection technology (ie: TLDI, e-tec, optimax, hpdi, etc), oils that meet the minimum standard for TCW3 don't work as well as oils that have been blended specifically for DI engines. Tohatsu, unlike other manfacturers, actually lists different oils (including competitor's oils) that they've tested and approved with the TLDI technology.

I would suggest that to avoid any future problems just use any of the oils they've listed on their website and stay away from just any ole TCW3 oil. At least this way you know it's been approved by the manufacturer.

and for the Nissan brand you can view it here:

(forgot you were talking about a "Nissan" and not "Tohatsu"...same engine though)
