The battery is charged through those big leads that go to the battery....One has a red end the other one has a black end.

If the stator alternator has charging a coil in it, which it should, there should be two wires coming out that may be crimped off in plastic covers, or they may have been disconnected. These are providing alternating current. To charge a battery this current must be rectified to DC. So to trace the whole system there should be two AC wires to a rectifier, one ground off the rectifier, or it can have the ground through what bolts it down, and then a red wire from the rectifier, usually to the same stud as the red cable lead from the battery on a solenoid. In any event the heavy red cable from the battery will take the DC current from the rectifier to the battery, and the black cable from the battery goes to ground some place. A diagram will help, almost all outboard systems are similar. The two AC wires coming out from the charging coils under the flywheel can be any color. You can test them with ac setting on a meter.
Cheers.
