This is the auxiliary motor for my sailboat, kept in salt water, hauled in the winter. I notice a lot of salt residue around the head gasket, and there also seems to be some corrosion on the small pump on the cylinder head. Unfortunately, this engine only gets flushed at the end of the season, because the boat is kept on a mooring and there is no ready access to water.

Is it normal for salt to accumulate in these locations, or is this the sign of a problem? Thanks.

Pretty normal, spray it down with WD-40 or the likes.

I have been spraying mine down w/WD-40 (also Merc 200 hp) since 1989. But I am sure CRC is better. I've got TRC product you would not want to use because it forms a thick ugly coating on everything. I do use it on the parts which ar starting to rust on the Merc yoke, etc. Saltwater does take its' toll.

check how your fuel lines are, wd-40 will eat through them

Fuel lines are great, WD-40 is nothing but (about 90%) diesel fuel (oil) w/odor taken out of it.

It'll eat away the lube around your throttle linkages too.
