Hello all,

I've got a problem with my honda 7.5 outboard. Circa 1985, it starts on the first or second pull every time and runs well with a fair amount of gas going into it, but at idle or when I shift into gear and the engine throttles down, it coughes and backfires, and sometimes dies. It always starts back up, but I'd love to figure out what is wrong. Last year I took the carb off and took it to a local mechanic who blew out the injectors and set the idle screws with the warning to never touch them again as his setting was perfect for our climate/that model. It ran great all year after I got it to him. Also, last year I replaced the spark plugs. The only thing I can think of is that I let the engine sit all year without winterizing it. Could that have done anything. Also, I've heard bugs sometimes get in air intakes? Where might I look? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

James
