I suspect I am getting gas in the crankcase. Is the a way to check to see if the fuel pump is bad?

Remove the fuel pump mounting bolts. Have your assistant pump the primer bulb. Look for fuel leakage around the plunger. If no leaks found, continue pumping the primer bulb and depress the plunger, and look for leaks. If no leaks found, you have another problem. Make sure the thermostat is not stuck open.

Are you saying that a bad thermostat would cause gas to enter the crankcase?

Yes. If motor does not come up to proper operating tempature, some of the fuel may not be burnt, and go past the rings into the crankcase. Typical of a 4-stroke.
