Nissan Lower Unit Question

I just replaced my impeller for the first time in my 99 5hp 2cyc. The shift rod that goes into the lower part rotates around and I'm not sure which way it should sit before pushing lower assembly all back together? Also I can't get the lower unit to slide back in where it meets the long pickup tube coming down from top of engine, it just stops, what to do? Side question, I thought an impeller was supposed to spin, it's just a rubber star stuffed in a cup that does not move, how is this? Seems it should work w/o one, but I know that is not possible. Please help. I need to go sailig!
Thanks,
John

Re: Nissan Lower Unit Question

John,

The driveshaft needs to go into the crankshaft when you go to install the lower unit back on. Your hitting the top of the drive shaft onto the bottom of the block causing all of your other problems. Also, there should be a pin that locks the impeller onto the driveshaft so that when the driveshaft spins the impeller will turn with it.
