Honda 15hp x-long shaft

I have a honda four stroke 15 hp that has the extra long shaft. Is it possible to shorten the shaft length by removing the riser on the shaft and replacing the shift rod? How difficult will this modification be and is it possible? Will I also have to change the water pump connectings? The motor runs great but is just to long for a comfortable ride on my jon boat.

I am not a mechanic, but don't like to see someone spend a lot of money w/o real need. Is it possible to put a plate on the transon of your jon boat to raise the motor to the needed height?<br />If you run the boat standing up, it might even help out a little there.
