I have a 1999 Honda 8hp 4 stroke on my sailboat. It puts out 5amps of charging power. I have put together the cable that will connect the motor to my battery for recharging. Before putting it on I wondered it I might run a chance of overcharging my battery.

We don't use our boat lights much so there isn't much drain on the battery. We use the motor to leave and enter the dock area so it is used maybe 15-20 minutes each trip 2-3 times a week, at low rpm.

Am I OK to make the connection or do I need some sort of device to prevent an overcharge? Any advice is much appreciated.
