97ish 8hp Honda 4-stroke won't pump water

I tried to pull the foot off to check the impeller but there is a cable that runs from the gear shifter to the gears that I can't get off. I checked older forums and there is supposed to be a jam nut but my buddy whose usually quite mechanically incline and I cannot find it. Any ideas? Also, any ideas on the water pump issue? Thanks in advance.

If you know the exact particulars about your engine, you could look up the exploded view of it on here at iboats parts section or a lot of other marine engine websites and see how it goes together. That would show you every part and where they go. Iboats does sell internal and other parts for most marine engines. Take a look.
