My friend has a 1999 honda 50hp 4 stroke. Last year it ran fine and this year we took it out and it was fine while we were motoring across the lake. Then we started trolling slow and low oil light came on and beeper was going off. We checked the oil and it was fine. We sped up back to the launch and warning went away. Then started after we started slow through no wake zone. Any ideas?

Typically you do see temp problems more then oil problems on those motors. When the alarm is going off you can unplug the the sensors one at a time until you find out which one is causing the alarm. Overfull oil can cause a low oil pressure alarm, when you overfill the oil it can aerate the oil and aerated oil will not hold pressure.

He said he looked at the manual online and it says low lubricant level. Would that mean lower unit gear oil or engine oil?

He looked further in the online manual and now he says it could be temperature sensor. But he did say it was pissing water while it was running

There are no oil/lube level sensors, only an engine oil pressure sensor. A damaged water pump housing could loose pressure at higher RPMs, also the thermostat could be obstructed or not opening all the way. Carefully inspect the upper and lower water pump housings, i see them melts frequently because these engines are not designed to be ran on a water hose with flush attachement like most other motors. You mult block off the secondary water intake or you will damage the water pump every time.
