88 Force 125 control box knob, what does it do?

Hi everyone, this is my first post on iboats and I'm happy to be here. I recently purchased a small ski boat this winter with a 1988 Force 125 motor. The control box is a US Marine unit and I understand all the controls except one. There is an unmarked twist knob below the ignition and next to the kill switch. The knobs tightens when turned clockwise and loosens when turned counter-clockwise. I tried to research and found some saying it's a throttle friction knob and others saying it's an idle control. Any definitive answer? I wish it was labeled. Thanks for the help!

No Title

That knob is for a kill switch lanyard.

Yes, it is a friction control knob for the throttle handle. Almost every one I have seen or used does not function. Sometimes an owner will twist the knob too far and the threaded portion inside the control box will come out of its nut, rendering it useless. If you are happy with the force needed to move the control handle and if you don't mind holding the handle down at cruise Just forget about the knob.

Sorry!!
Didn't read enough(was that in there before?)
Go for a ride.
Turn it to the left.
See if the throttle creeps back.
Then turn it in and see if the throttle stays in place.
Yes/ No??
You can take it apart and see if the parts need work.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm taking the boat out tomorrow and now I feel more comfortable that I don't have another adjustment to fiddle with. Thanks again!
