The seal and bushing fell out when I yanked this LU and I couldn't tell how it was supposed to go. Is this right? This is a 125HP from 1989 by the way.

It would be best if you list what motor this is from Model and serial # so people can help you....also try not to do multiple posts on the same issue ;)

Yes, that is correct. That's how it goes into the shaft with the long side of the seal against the retainer.

That's normal. It just keeps some grease on the splines. They fall out when you remove the lower unit. It's installed correctly in the picture. Just don't put a large amount of grease on the splines. A light coating is all that is necessary. Seen many a lower unit that was missing the rubber boot. It's not a show stopper.

Thanks guys! That bushing (retainer?) has a flat side and a dished side. I put the flat side against the driveshaft's flat edge and the dished side against that seal. I assume that's right but I don't want to assume anything.

That is correct also. The flat side against the shaft shoulder.
