Lamination on 2nd (lower) Cyl looks good.

This is top Cyl which has no or very low spark.

Motor runs on lower Cyl fine, not on top Cyl.

Coil (primary and secondary) looks good on Ohm meter.

Could this lamination be the cause of no spark?

Ordered new points, maybe that is the problem...

Thanks for any help...

1. Switch coils and ck your results.
2. Dress old points with fine emery, cln good, set at .020, ck continuity with ohm meter, ck results.
3. Post good close pic to show concern, and possibly other problems (attached all original since 1984 buy cleaned).
4. Any history of when this started and more?

Noticing the rusting on your laminations, make sure you have good terminations on all your cables, ground wires etc.

Re: 1972 Chrysler 20hp 203HD Stator Plate Lamination Question

Have not switched coils yet...good suggestion...thanks.

Did remove points, disassembled and cleaned each one, re-installed, gapped at .020.

Checked Ignition Coils with Ohm meter and have good continuity on primary and secondary reads at 6...believe that is 6000 as I have meter set to Ohm X 1000. All coils on all 3 of my motors are reading the same. (I have 3 of these same models)

Both plugs show spark when I turn the flywheel. They look the same to me nice white spark.

I bought this motor and it was this way.

Both Cyl have compression 115 lb ea...

The only difference I am noticing right now is the lamination on the lower (good running) Cyl looks good the top Cyl looks like the pics above with separation...

I'm wondering if the top Cyl is not getting a good enough spark????

Thanks, Gary

Re: 1972 Chrysler 20hp 203HD Stator Plate Lamination Question

Do you think the lamination's could be the problem. I will clean them better, but is the separation bad or should it run like they are?

I got in sets of new points and installed them.

No change with the top Cyl. Still won't run on top Cyl alone...:mad-new:

Thanks Again, Gary

Re: 1972 Chrysler 20hp 203HD Stator Plate Lamination Question

Well I swapped out the stator plate with a used/like new one and swapped the coils. Now it's running on each Cyl individually. The bad lamination on the one coil must have been just bad enough to allow a spark, but keep it from running.

Next step is to run it on the lake. Just with the way it sounds and feels when I rev the motor now though I think it's going to run at WOT. Knock on wood...:faint2:
