First post here on iBoats...

Finishing up a fairly thurough restore and cannot find temperature ranges for this motor...:grumpy:

Hoping to find operating ranges for low idle temp, running temp, pre-overheat temp, overheating (warning) temp...

My motor has no thermostat (that I know of)...:fear:

Any help here would be greatly appreciated...:pray2:

Welcome. Guessing it's a 20hp.

Thank you for your reply...

Yes, it's a 20hp.

I have a non-contact lazar thermometer and I shut the motor down at 160. I will, in the future, stop it at 145.

I have been working on this motor for some time and ran 1st barrell test yesterday. Fixed, replaced, repaired, gear housing, impeller, fuel pump, carb, fuel lines, stator.

I have a twin to this motor (202HG) and it does not get too hot even at WOT. At idle I can press my hand on the heads.

Are you basing the temps you listed from experience or do you have specs?

From my reading your are correct as a thremostat should open at 145 degrees to cool the engine. 163 degrees is the low end of damage and should set of a temp alarm (if one is installed).

I do not have a thermostat and it pumps water well and continuously.

Any sugestions as to things I can check to determine why it's getting hot. Shows no signs of this happening in the past and it has good compression...

I am pretty fast at uploading pics...let me know what you would to see and I will snap and post...

Re: 1972 Chrysler 203HD Temperature Question

I was able to determine that I was running the engine to slow in the barrell...

Turns out I needed to increase RPM's to increase impeller speed...

That increased wather flow and reduced engine temp...:faint2:

Now running as Jerry suggested at around 130 degrees...:drum:

Took it out on the lake this morning and now have another issue, which, I will post as another thread.

Thanks for the info...:clap2:
