66 45hp Chrysler starter/solenoid

have had trouble getting the key to trip the starter. if I by pass the starter solenoid it will go. neutral switch is good. just put in a new circuit breaker in. can I rebuild the solenoid or could I test it. don't really want to pay 50 bucks plus shipping for another one. any ideas

From my experience with autos, it?s probability bad ?if it has been used all these years?. There is a copper disc that makes contact on every start, it takes a beating. I have open many to see the bad contacts. I do not agree on what another solenoid will cost or a rebuild. Why would a simple inexpensive auto solenoid not work?
