Is a 1989 Force lower unit compatible with a 1996 Force ?

The lower unit on my 1996 120 HP Force outboard has stopped working. A friend has a 1989 Force Lower Unit they are willing to sell. My question is whether the two lower units are compatible ??

go to a website where they sell the lower units for both years and model and compare the part numbers. if the look similar i would imagine so. count the splines and make sure the bolt patterns are the same

If you search back a few pages you will find a somewhat recent thread from Frank Acampora explaining and detailing with pictures the necessary alterations needed to retrofit the newer(mercury type) lower unit to the older Force motor leg...
