Mercury lower unit with rotating shift lever. The lower unit shift lever has splines. It detents in neutral and reverse but I think you can travel too far in forward. CAREFULLY using a pliers, move the shift lever into neutral--check by rotating prop. Put the engine in neutral and install the lower unit.
You MAY need to support the shift rod inside the midleg so it lines up accurately with the lower unit rod. On some models there is enough play so that it will miss the lower rod completely and you will have no shifting.
