I had this 55 hp Chrysler, 1976 motor which is a great runner. I bought an '84 Bayliner 1600 with no motor or controls. The steering cable is there though. So I put the 55 on the boat but there's no steering cable tube on the pivot point. How were these motors connected to the steering?
Any ideas on how I can make this work?
Any help is much appreciated.

I'll give them a try. Thanks. Any idea if they made these motors both with and without pivot tubes?

Yes the later years had the steering tubes on the motors.
If you can find a later year junker. You probably could change it over.
Trying to buy new, you wouldn't find the parts.
The old and newer styles would swap easily.

Although later Chryslers had transom clamps with holes for the steering tube, you can not simply change the clamps. You must change the whole pivot yoke assembly. That is a difficult job.

Your easiest route is to buy the Teleflex transom mount . HOWEVER, some fellows here have also mounted on the clamps, brackets to hold a steering tube. Perhaps one will chime in with a photo.

I wonder if 76 was the cut off date because I found a 77 that has it. I'll look for a new swivel bracket and arms with a tube. Can't be too difficult to change one out can it? Can it?
