I was given this boat a couple years ago and
Would get the overheating alarm once in awhile but nothing to stall the engine sometimes I never got alarm. Today I got the alarm and it stalled. Let the engine cool off and restarted. Noticed there is water spraying out of a threaded hole on top of engine by plugs. Is this hole supposed to be plugged? There's plenty of flow I was just thinking that instead of cooling the water was spraying out this hole which could have Been the problem.

Sounds like you're on the way to losing the engine or may have already lost it. Pics of the threaded hole spraying water would help.

No water should be spraying out anywhere under the cowl.

Missing a screw or bolt on the head? the thermostat cover? or the top of the block?

A photo of the offending hole would really help.

And if you haven't changed the water pump recently, now is the time.

Your plug is a hole for adding a pee tube or a pressure guage or a backup temp guage.
It's a simple pipe plug.
Fill it up.
Possible it was the reason it overheated.
Possible but you need to change the impeller just to be sure????
