Please excuse any miss technical vocab. I was having trouble starting my motor the starter was just spinning. A friend told me that the solenoid was sticking on the starter motor. After giving it a few wacks with a hammer it poped up and the motor started. (i was out in the bay) so it was a relief. Does this solenoid need to be replaced or oiled? or cleaned?
Thanks guys!

Ok, the solenoid is an electric switch, I believe it is located in the far back corner of the lower cowl, on the port side.
It is not in the starter.
The signal from your ignition switch triggers the solenoid, which sends electricity to power the starter.

The solenoid either works, or it doesn't.

The sliding part on the starter with the little gear on top, is the bendix.
The shaft should be cleaned, then lubed with a tiny amount of wd40.
Do not use oil, or spray on a large amount of wd40.
The excess will run down the shaft and can ruin the starter.
Also, dirt will stick to it and make the bendix stick again.

Most every starter can be broken internally if you whack on it with a hammer.
They all say "do not strike with hard object".

The entire starter can be disassembled, cleaned, rebuilt, and put back together, if it is giving you trouble.

If you need to replace the starter, stick with a major brand name, Mercury, Sierra, Arco. Stay away from the cheap chinese knockoff starters.

Your motor can be started with relative ease, in the event of a dead battery or broken starter.
Find or obtain the little rope and learn how to use it, it may save your life some day.

When I rebuild the starters I use a VERY TINY TOUCH of grease on the worm gear.
Did I mention a very small bit??
Like Roscoe said too much can ruin the bendix and the starter.
I don't like to use any kind of spray on the starter.
I use white litium grease.
