Hi, i am have a problem with force 125hp 1989. if i idle for more then a few mins the Overheat alarm will sound. but if i start it and start going above 5mph, the alarm will no sound.
At first i though it was overheat and change out the impeller and check the water flow. everything it ok. but stil if i let it idle for more then a few mintues the overheat alarm sound.
Here is my questions:
1) is over heating the only alarm on this OB?
2) how can i check for overheat? I use my hand to feel the water comming out of the 2 holes at the back , water is hot but can still feel it with hand. what should be the water temp exiting?
3) where do i start? since the alarm only sound when idle. not at high speed.

First, you need to make sure you have the proper idle speed. 1000~1100 RPM on idle and around 750~850 in gear engaged. The other thing to check is the water port system and also the thermostat to make sure it opens fully. Remove and inspect the t-stat and test it in hot water. It's not unusual marine growth will narrow the water paths so you might want to clean it as much as you can.
