reed valves 88 50 hp force

i resonantly replaced the reed valves on my out board and tried to start it but now it does not want to accelerate should the reeds have a air gap the old reeds had a big air gap but had no power and would not idle down

The reeds can have a small gap.How hard is it to open the reeds?
Compression?Spark?If the original reeds had a small gap and not broken then maybe change them back.
Air screw in to the bottom,out 1 turn.
Idle(towershaft)750-800 in the water 1100-1200 driveway.
Carb clean? Jets not blocked??
The fuel recirc system clear?
