I have a 1994 Force 120hp outboard. New to boating. Should my primer ball be hard when engine is running? Boat runs great when I start it up but dies after when I idle it down. It starts right back up but dies when I shift into gear. I changed plugs, but on new fuel filter. I checked the primer ball is soft when the engine is running? Should that be hard? The engine seems like it is not getting enough fuel.. THank you for any help....

1994 120hp force outboard dies when shifting to reverse or forward

Engine is shutting down when shifting to either reverse or forward. Replaced Plugs, Fuel filter and cleaned carbs. it seems like it is not getting enough fuel.. Starts right up and idles fine but shut down when trying to shift.. Any thoughts anyone?

have someone squeeze the ball when you shift, if it stays running you know its a fuel issue. If yes check pick up tube to fuel pump and then possibly dirty carbs.

Idle RPM's in forward gear in water should be 750. On muffs in neutral about 1100. Less will cough out.

I will need to get a tach and see where the RPM's are at. Should the primer bulb be firm at all times? I did find tonight a small crack in one of the fuel lines, but no fuel is leaking out of that line. Thank you for your help.

Never had the need to check the bulb when the engine is running so I don't know about all times. If it collapses then there is an obstruction between it and the fuel in the tank. A crack in the line could be letting air in and not seep fuel out, change it.

Could the crack fuel line cause my shifting problem? It takes about 5 to 10 times of shift before it sticks and I can take off....

No, linkage adjustment will fix that or a more manly thrust on the shifter.G'night

If your motor dies when shifting into gear try increasing your idle. Loosen the nut with an 11mm crescent wrench then turn in the screw a turn or two. It doesn't take much, so don't go crazy. Then tighten the nut again. A tiny tach should work until you install a dash mount. They run about $50.

Hope this helps,
Tom

By any chance do you have one of these connectors?

Yes, It does help. I thought about turning the idle up. It seems like it idles very low after it warms up. Where is the idle adjustment located.. ??? Thank you for your help!!

The ball shouldn't stay hard after you start. It's just for pulling fuel from the tank.
Your fuel pump isn't strong enough.
Once the motors running it will then have enough umph to draw fuel.

Now start with a compressio/spark test.
Poor comp or no spark will make the motor run bad and do what's been described.
Plugs burning right?
Rebuild the fuel pump..
Any soft or mushy hoses?Ethanol is not a friend.
A crack in the hose will suck air as well as leak gas.
So if you don'rt see gas it's OK Change it cause it's going bad.
RPM'S in gear 750-800 in the water.1100-1200 on the hose/driveway.
