Sounds like a linkage problem on the shift cable side. unhook the cables shift it manually, if it shifts into forward ok manually, then adjust the cable end until it works as it should.
If it's grinding going into gear.The clutch dog is probably wearing down and needs to be replaced.After you do what tater says look at the dog.
Fortunatly the lower is fairly easy to take apart.J
