Force 40 hp shift rod linkage

I did not mark rod/coupler and now am not sure how it goes back together.

When you reattach, are the lower and upper rods suppose to butt up next to each other or spaced out to a correct distance? Would this be the way to fine tune it by varying the amount of space in between the upper and lower rods when threading on the coupler?

I think I got it.
I disconnected the linkage and put both the control end and the lower unit in neutral, then threaded the connector down until it engaged with the lower rod and that seems to have the right length action for proper shifting.
