Is there a separate water pump or is the water pump basically the impeller and the associated gaskets? How hard is it to remove the lower unit casing and are there any particulars that I need to be aware of? We have not had our boat in the water in about 10 years although I have cranked it up on average once a year with the lower unit in a bucket. This weekend it made a noise like something was loose just behind the flywheel and I noticed the back top portion of the engine seemed hot in a rather short time. I am guessing it is not getting water to cool the engine but without a repair manual did not know if the impeller and water pump were one and the same or not.

Thanks in advance for any tips for repairs.

Depending on your series of outboard. It will be the same as mine.
If you outboard is from the 35-45-55 series.

To replace the impeller. all you need to do is remove the outer shroud. Then disconnect the shift linkage. There will be 4 bolts/nuts holding the leg on.

Unscrew the nuts. (not the bolts) slide the motor leg off.
Your impeller will be on a housing where the drive shaft. .

Should look similar to this:
