1998 120HP force. cold start needs high revs.

hi knowledgeble folks
the only way to start this engine appears to be to have the fast idle lever hard on with choke. on starting the choke can be dropped but the engine always stalls unless the RPM kept high at ~ 5,000 RPM.

had it to the shop a couple of times but the problem not fixed.
seems a brutal way to start a cold engine:mad:
is this normal and if not what are the tweaks to look for ?

Ouch, I agree, shouldn't have to rev it up to 5,00o RPM's. How does it act once it's warmed up? Does it have a tendency to stall when going from idle speed to WOT to get up on plane even after it's warm? The symptoms you are describing sounds like the fuel mixture is too lean.

Are you squeezing the primer bulb until it's pretty firm before you start?
