Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I recently bought an 1988 bayline capri bowrider with an 85hp force o/b. I am fairly mechanically inclined but not with marine. I launched it on the lake the other day and found out all of a sudden I only had reverse, it would clunk and almost grind no matter how hard or fast i put it into forward. Got it out of the water and played with the shift cable adjustments as far as they would go and now have forward, mostly. I was told that it was probably slop in the cable.
So my questions are these:
1. is it most likely the cable, or possibly the "dog gears"?
2. if it is the cable is there any way to find out what the correct length should be as I am all but possitive this is not the original cable installed and could be the wrong cable length. so measuring it may not be the best answer.

on a site note, which is the best manual for these force outboards?

Thank you all so much.
This site has been EXTREMELY helpful.
