1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

I just recently aquired a 1970 35hp Chrysler model# 355HA. I was informed from previous owner that motor had not been run in approx. 2 years but was fully winterized prior to non-use. I have gotten motor running good, but as I run in a large drum of water I see no sign of water exiting lower unit. I am thinking impeller but before I tear into it, I was not sure if there is a thermostat on this motor? If so, is it possible I'm not getting motor warm enough to flow water. I assume the clear hose on rear left side of engine is a water hose. I see condensation in hose but when disconnected all I feel is warm air pumping through. I have ordered a repair manual but it still maybe a few days before I get it. Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

I think we have the same 35 HP motor. I will share these experiences and more and Pics to your direct e-mail, if you need more info. Adding attachment here works good some times but not consistently. Any Tips?

1. There is a thermostat at, top L. rear with a tube attached to (2 bolts?).
My tube is not clear but I like the idea and plan to add a clear hose.

2. The motor will have to warm-up before the water will flow.
Depending on the area's temp as in TX in the summer vs winter not long.

3. I feel the level of the water and turbulence in the drum affects the flow.
I feel the flow is better when the water is ?well? above the intake ports.

4. I have pics of replacing points and prop shaft seal (few repairs in 25 yrs).

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

Info questions & an attachment related to 35 HP is about middle of page 2.

Title: Should a 35 HP Chrysler's water pump discharge be solid or a mixed?
On the 35 HP Chrysler 1971 or 73 model, Mod. # 3555, Ser. # 2365.

It will show the water level I run when testing in the drum. Other drum Tips:

1. Idle or just above is all I trust my drum to show good performance on.

2. "Short" Quick Burst & Power might look good but it's different on the lake.

3. A Quick test on close lakes is above the drum, even with boat on trailer.

My 35 HP and 15" Ray Craft Will Scoot about 32 MPH "When Tuned Right".

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to launch her at a nearby lake today and see what kind of flow I get. I'll post my results. Thank you,

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

Ran the boat again in tub after dumping some water in water hose in hopes to "prime" the system. Well, either it worked or it was a coincidence because she started flowing water. Took her on the lake and is cooling great. I guess I have one more dumb question, does that motor have reverse?? Mine did not have reverse?

1. Good report on the cooling.
2. I have reverse and I feel all the motors will with proper control adjustments.
3. This is where a more experience person with controls is needed.
4. The best I can do is send you Pics of my control if needed.

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

There are no Dumb questions when you are new w/o ref. information.

1. You got my interest up since it had been so many years since I explored F/R.

2. My ref. will be from my motor since I h/n seen your exact model (send Pics).

3. Do you have a control similar to my attachment, if I can get it attached?

4. My control is geared to Start/Neutral, Forward, Reverse and Acceleration.

5. Reverse position has spring-loaded acceleration when you shift to reverse.

6. If you have a control and linkages similar, I feel it is an adjustment matter.

7. I took 10 pics of control's position, linkage position and will try to att. 3.

8. I c/n attach here, I think it's related to a pop-ups message being blocked.

Good Luck,
Joe

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

I am learning a little about adding attachments with these messages.

1. I have to add iboat to my list to accept pop-ups from (under tools). Or! Press "and hold" the Alt button to temporary disable my pop-up blocker.

2. I usually send my attachments about twice the allowed size to show better details when enlarged. What they allow is not bad vs no Pics.

3. You should see 3 of the 10 Pics I took to get a feel for my info.

Re: 1970 Chrysler 35hp Cooling system Question

Thanks for all the help guys. With your info and some other posts on here I was able to find an adjustment on the linkage under the lower motor cover and adjust slightly, now all is well. Thanks!!
