solder splice with heatshrink cover is best. As long as the cable jacket is good at motor then you are okay. If water can creep up jacket and find way into motor then you are not okay. Inside of motor is not painted so even tiny little bit of water can cause huge damage. When it comes to water vapor, splash, rain, mist, humidity ... zero tolerance is best policy. You can't buy new motors to fit your engine anymore. best you can do is compatible motor on bigger reservoir and then bend oil tubes to fit. So protect the motor you have. anything else is a step down.
