A longer cable wont work as good as the correct one. But it should be ok to use. Sounds like you need to stay away from you helper.A cable adjustment is very hard to explain.
It sounds like both cables need adjusting.Find a good mech in your area.Jerry

Re: Throttle Cable for a force 85

I wish I had found this thread sooner.

My Brother and I have been working on this very thing. Surprisingly the Force Manual has a pretty good proceedure on how to complete it (better than the seloc manual which was fairly useless in this case). We followed it with success.

If you don't have the manual you can find a copy of it @ http://reinsmith.net/content/boating/Force_85-125_HP_Outboard_Owners_Manual.pdf start with Page 7 and just take it step by step, it's not THAT complicated.

Hopefully this comes in time before you spend money on a mechanic. If not maybe someone else can find it useful.

Post back here if you have questions

Good Luck

M
