Shifting Question - Chrysler 9.2 Please Help!

I just picked up my uncle's 1967 Chrysler 9.2 that has very low hours but hasn't been used in a few years. It still turns over but is stuck in forward gear. My question is how much force can I apply to the shift lever to move it to neutral? I don't want to break it.

Do I need to go to the extreme of dropping the lower unit or is there a less invasive way to approach it.

Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Not familar with the engine but, put some penatrating oil at the shift handle where the shift shaft goes thru, let it sit, re oil it with penatrating oil a few times over an hours time, then give it a try, the shift lever may be stuck.

Sounds like the problem i had with my 65 sea king i just bought, but i found out they will only change gears when they are running or when you pull on the rope, shifting was fine once i found this out
