self-bleeding. run it up and down a few times. air bubbles get pushed back into resevoir and float to surface.

fluid should be either hydraulic oil or motor oil. around '92 they started using ATF and sometimes you find an older system where someone has used ATF. Don't mix ATF and oil. You can mix motor oil with hydraulic oil. Use non-detergent motor oil. Detergent oil will shorten lifespan of o-rings.

Oil goes in the plug on side of pump motor. Don't overtighten plug. It's only purpose in life is to keep water out. It has an o-ring around the collar. The seal is between o-ring and resevoir ... not threads. Tighten it only enough so that it won't fall out.

My 96 60hp Mercury is required to be LOCKED UP before removing the plug.

Re: how to bleed 2 wire trim tilt 90hp force

when the trim is extended there is nothing but oil in the slave cylinders. When it is down there is also the piston shaft. An amount of oil equal to size of piston shaft(s) gets pushed back into resevoir and compresses the trapped air.

With small resevoirs filling while down can result in a dry pump as the system is raised. Filling while up means that oil level is higher than plug when down and that the resevoir is pressurized. So merc has two good reasons to require that system is locked up before removing plug. 1) pump won't work when resevoir runs dry. 2) nobody likes a face full of oil

The prestolites have a large enough resevoir capacity to be filled in any position. Filling while up gives you more reserve fluid. Filling while down means that oil will never come spewing out.
