I am replacing a head gasket on a force 9.9/15 hp motor.

what should I torque the head bolts too and should I follow a pattern when tighting the bolts.

It should be around 15-18 ft/lbs but get a service manual or Clymers to be for sure. You should also use new bolts. Do not use a gasket sealer. If you did, clean all the surfaces again and put on a new gasket minus the gasket sealer. My service manual suggest the middle bolts first then the outside bolts in a staggered (figure eight) pattern starting from the top. You may need to retorque the bolts after the first couple of uses.
