Dear all, I'm trying to check the choke using a multimeter and getting a short circuit (0.5 ohm), does it mean that I can throw it away and go shop for a new solenoid? Please help.

No. The typical reading is between .4 and .7 ohms. You can try testing it with a 10 amp battery charger. Connect the battery charger to the solinoid and turn the battery charger on and it should engage the plunger. Make sure when you test it you disconnect the wires to the motor first.
