Chrysler 40hp Shifting Problem

I have an old (1972?) Chrysler 40 hp that won't shift into forward gear when cold. Shifts fine into reverse. After a few minutes shifts into forward. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

is the shifter gummed up at all, is there any thign obstructing the shift mechanism?

I have a sugesstion, sell it and buy a Merc. Just kidding. I agree with Nitro. Make sure that all the shifting linkages are clean and lightly lubricated. These old Chryslers are very simple, everything on them were designed to be very basic and non-complicated so that they were easy to work on.
