1989 Force 150 HP Dual exhaust lower unit

I wanted to change the water pump impeller on my 1989 Force 150 HP Lower unit . When I dropped the lower unit out of the upper housing and removed drive shaft a broken E clip fell out. I see it on the exploded view just above drive shaft coupling but I do not see a groove in shaft. what is it for and dose it just go on shaft or was it inside coupling?

It goes inside the coupling. It just serves as a stop to keep the shaft from sliding all the way through the coupling.
