Drain gear oil in a clean container so you can reuse if new,if old drain it,
You need to find a presure vacumm hand pumptool to test the lower unit gear box for leaks.
Harbor freight tools,amazon,e-bay, google search, buy one.
You tube videos explains it better than i can, it can leak out the drive shaft or prop shaft,

Got any Youtube video links to help the OP?

Welcome aboard, Galaxie.

Do you have water in the lower unit lube?

Oil seal on gear drive dry.

Is the drive gear the splines on the driveshaft/crankshaft? More than likely either the driveshaft seal(s) under the water pump or shift shaft seals are leaky. Pressure testing will help ID a leaking seal.

A Google link to several lower unit pressure testing - https://www.google.com/search?q=you...wer+unit&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1

The oil is probably unburned gas/oil.
It leaks down through the cracks and crevices and settles in the low spots.
Change the oil and check for water?
Then do a pressure test if the oil is contaminated.

Some posters parrot their suggestions and really don't have a clue.

Makes sense. I could see it clear up to the bottom of the motor. I checked the oil level, it?s full, doesn?t look bad, but it?s probably best drain it and see.
