i've come here for help because i believe in y'all. i removed my lower end to do the water pump impeller and now gears wont shift out of forward. had it in neutral during removal but have since read that you're supposed to put it in forward. now clicking sound when turn prop by hand. shift rod can be rotated about 270 degrees when rotate prop a little to help, but doesn't do any shifting...remains in forward. think i messed something up with the cam in the bottom and am desperate for advise if this can be corrected without taking all gears out and performing surgery???

The shift rod could be 180d out??
You don't need to have it in F to replace.
It helps if it is but not necessary.
You need to torn the shift rod till it is in N.
This might not be easy??

do you mean to turn the rod past where it wants to go? right now it turns somewhat freely but wont go past a certain point. im afraid of breaking something if i force it.

It would be real hard to break it.
Turn the prop shaft as you turn the rod.
