Are these things rebuildable? My motor is a pig to lift up and down, and when it is tilted up, the only thing holding it up is the small tilt catch.

I assume from factory, these were made to assist lifting the motor up, and take some strain off of the catch.

Is my only option buying a tilt/trim setup? I don't need anything fancy, just to return them to how they used to work.

Under the rubber cover are 4 holes. Possibly for a spanner wrench? I can't see a seam where the gland nut would unscrew however.

There is a seam you just can't see it.

Yes a spanner wrench should fit.
Just finding the right one???

You might need to use some heat to undo the top.

Can't see how the top connects but you might be able to get them off without removing the motor

I got it apart. Good god corrosion is not my friend.

In the end there is nothing rebuildable inside. The only seals are the gland nut seals.

There is a solid piston on the rod and a small gap in the cylinder sleeve that acts as a restricted passage.

About the best I can do is refill this with new and possibly thicker oil. This also confirms to me that these are not meant to assist tilting at all. They are only for easing the motor down from the tilted position.

I attached a picture for future google searches.

Measure the shock.
Measure the holes or a couple of pics with a ruler next to it.
I might have one??? Maybe???
If it matches?? You can have it for packing/shipping cost.

Yes you are correct. It is not meant for assisting in tilting/trimming the motor. You need a hydraulic pump for trimming and tilting the motor up.

You may be able to install a later model tilt/trim set up, but they are not cheap, even used ones are pretty pricey.

Must have made a trip to the scrap yard.

No worries. These are working now as intended. I was just under the mistaken impression that they assisted in tilting. I filled them with 80w90 gear oil and now they cushion much better.

Now, if you had a powered tilt/trim setup for sale.... lol

Yea Ill keep looking. Best I've found is $400, and I'd rather struggle with this thing than pay that.

Cheers.
