Hey all. I had low compression in #3 cylinder. I pulled the head and found a broken head gasket, but I also found some broken rings on multiple cylinders, and some minor scoring.

Can anyone tell me if you can get just the rings? Or would I have to get the Wiseco pistons loaded ($$$).

Trying to do a cost benefit analysis on saving the engine.

Thanks,

Chay

Broken rings are not good, they tend to chew up pistons, cylinder walls, cylinder heads, and finally your wallet. Scored cylinders usually means a reborn and oversize pistons. Full power head disassembly and inspection. Doing it half assed is just delaying a failure, usually on far size of lake at dusk, with a nasty storm on the horizon headed towards you. Only you can determine if worth spending the money on an overhaul

I am not sure about the bore of the 135Hp either it is 3,312 in as all other 3-4 cyl. Chryslers (70, 75, 85, 90, 105, 120Hp etc)
OR it has the 3,375 in bore.
You have to measure and check what pistons are in your engine.
I would suggest you to talk to Franz at Franz Marine, he maybe have factory made rings.
Some years ago I bought such rings for a 1976 75Hp Chrysler, which had one light scored cylinder.

As jimmbo stats, check the walls and measure the bore in all cylinders.
Also check the pistons and do not through money in the engine doing a "light" restoring.
In long terms it will cost more then doing a good adequate restoring.

The scoring will be addressed with a hone, which I will do before using new rings of course. And chamfer the ports as well.

I measure the bore at 3.35". Weird. Perhaps it has been overbored. I will have to remeasure.

I will send a note to Franz, thanks for the tip.

Rechecked the measurement a little more carefully. It's at 3.375.

Thanks,

I have checked and the 135Hp 1974-1977 have 3,375 in bore, the 130Hp 1972-1973 have 3,312 in.
You have to measure again.

It's a 3.375 for sure. It's a 1975 so that matches up. Thanks for digging that up.

I have been in contact with Franz marine. You can get rings only. I have one cylinder which will need more than the hone, so I'll need one oversize piston for sure.

Ah crap. The block shows cracks from the exhaust ports on two of the four cylinders. She's done.
