I am having trouble getting my 70 hp outboard to start. It is a 73 model, I have rebuilt all 3 carbs. Also rebuilt the fuel pump, it just cranks but won't fire. It you give it a spray of starter fluid it will fire off right away until the starter fluid is gone. Any ideas

Does the squeezie pump up hard?
Take the inline connectors out of the hose and hook it direct to the pump.

More info???

Thanks for the reply Jerry, Yes it does pump up hard. However just to eliminate any chance of a bad fuel line and pump I replaced the fuel line and the pump today still no luck. won't start without starter fluid , then only runs a second or two until the starter fluid is gone.

That sounds like the floats are stuck??
How and what did you use to clean them?
I use Dawn and compressed air to clean carbs.

Chemical cleaners can swell the rubber in the carbs and shut down the flow???

The needle/seat? what type needle? did it have a rubber tip or was it a solid piece of metal??

One thing to try: tilt the motor up all the way, then use the squeezie and pump till gas comes out the carbs.
The tilting moves the floats and allows the fuel to pass through.

Once it starts dripping lower and pump it up and then try to start.

You using the fast idle position?
